Two questions guide the assessment
Adrenal glands sit above the kidneys. A mass may be found incidentally, produce hormones or occasionally represent a malignancy. The assessment asks whether it is hormonally active and whether its imaging appearance is concerning.
Endocrine testing and review of scans help determine whether observation, further investigation or surgery is appropriate.
Hormones and operative planning
Hormone-producing tumours can require preparation with an endocrine and anaesthetic team. A suspected pheochromocytoma, which can release adrenaline-like hormones, needs specific assessment before invasive procedures.
The choice of an open, laparoscopic or robotic operation depends on size, invasiveness and other clinical factors. A minimally invasive approach is not suitable for every tumour.
Discussing adrenal surgery

Common questions
Does an incidental adrenal mass mean cancer?
No. Many are benign. The combination of imaging and hormone assessment is more informative than the word “mass” alone.
Is a needle biopsy always the next step?
No. Biopsy has a limited and selective role; the endocrine assessment and the purpose of tissue sampling must be considered first.
