Before a biopsy or operation
The team will provide instructions for testing, anaesthesia, fasting, medicines and arrival. Instructions vary between procedures and between patients.
Do not stop blood thinners, diabetes medicines, transplant medicines or other prescribed treatments on your own. Obtain an individual plan from the relevant clinical teams.
Discuss transport, help at home, time away from work and any special equipment or nursing support you may need.
After treatment and during follow-up
Before discharge, make sure you understand the medicines, wound care, activity advice and the plan for any catheter, stent, drain or stoma. Confirm the date and purpose of your next appointment.
For cancer surgery, ask when the final pathology will be discussed. For transplantation or reconstructive surgery, clarify how kidney function and drainage will be checked.
Record the treating team’s contact instructions. Severe or worsening symptoms, fever after an intervention, significant bleeding, inability to pass urine, chest pain or breathlessness require prompt assessment; a routine appointment request should not delay emergency care.
